City to Coast - New Exhibition
Contemporary artist Andrew Hood is delighted to be bringing his new exhibition, 'City to Coast', to Bristol for what will be his first major solo show in his home town.
Join Andrew as he manoeuvres his way through the European cities of Paris and Puglia. Bask in the warmth of the Cote D'Azur and stroll through the coastline of Britain before returning to the quirky backstreets of Bristol.
Ahead of this new exhibition, Andrew shares more about his new paintings, his creative process, and what continually draws him back to the vibrant city of Bristol.

What inspires you to paint Bristol?
“I have lived in Bristol for over twenty years. There are so many different and beautiful sections to it. I love sketching the city and seeking out parts which inspire me to make new paintings. "I enjoy the challenge of making these sketches work as paintings, this process – from observation, to drawing, and then to painting.”
Exploring a new colour palette…
“I have chosen a more muted and softer colour palette for this Bristol series. I wanted to make the paintings different to my European paintings to convey the quieter side of Bristol.
"I often paint fairly innocuous parts of the city that people walk up and down everyday without taking too much notice of them. The colour palette suits this mood.”
coastlines
“I’ve always spent a lot of time on the coast, from the wilder west coast of Scotland as a child to the stunning beaches of western France and the north of Spain. There’s something special about the sound of people on the beach with the backdrop of the noise of the sea and I try and convey this in my paintings.
"The South West coastline of Britain is one of my favourite places to escape to, and a subject that features prominently in this exhibition. I have a small boat and as soon as I get on the water my mind clears and I succumb to the beauty of the natural world.
"For me, one of the exciting things about painting is sharing that connection with a place. If I have been somewhere that I love I can't wait to share the feeling with someone through a painting. I find this with Salcombe especially."
INFLUENCE OF THE ABSTRACT
'City to Coast' demonstrates a visitation to the abstract. In this exhibition, we see how drawings and small paintings are used to develop ideas, influencing a series of large, bolder, more powerful pieces. Simple lines and splashes of colour reminiscent of the language of abstract expressionism evoke a sense of space, energy and place.
Andrew says, "I enjoy the challenge of working big and the freedom and sense of abandon that it can give. I have to plan a big painting carefully to work out where colours should go. The initial underpainting is fundamental to the finished painting, and the structure of the whole painting is based around these first layers."
